New To School Leadership? Here's How To Experience Success in Your First Year.

As August approaches, many school leaders are gearing up for the new academic year. Most likely, you already have orientation plans in place for new and returning staff. But what if this is your first time leading? How can you ensure these preparatory weeks set you up for success in your leadership journey?

Here are some tips I have to guide you:

𝗘𝗺𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴

Stories are a universal way to connect with others. Share the journey of your school and yourself in a way that honours past achievements while outlining your vision for the future. For example, consider highlighting a key success from the previous year and how it informs your goals. This approach shows respect for previous efforts and sets a clear direction moving forward.

𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗮𝗻 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗹𝗲

Staying connected with your team is essential, but it's important to manage your energy. Plan your meetings carefully—consider who needs access to you, when, and why. Create a schedule that works for both you and your team, and stick to it. This will help maintain balance and efficiency. Think about having open office hours or setting specific times for team check-ins.

𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘆

Let your team see who you are beyond your role as a leader. Share your educational philosophy, your passions, and what drives you. For instance, discuss a teaching method you’re passionate about or a personal story that influenced your career. This openness builds trust and strengthens your relationships with your team.

𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗵𝗶𝗳𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗗𝘆𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗰𝘀

If you’ve been promoted internally, understand that relationships may evolve. Friendships might shift, and perceptions of you could change. Approach these changes with empathy and clear communication to maintain a positive team environment. Be proactive in addressing any concerns and encourage open dialogue.

Remember, stepping into a leadership role is a unique challenge. It's about effectively conveying your vision and supporting your team to achieve their best. Embrace this opportunity with confidence and a clear sense of purpose.

How are you planning to approach your new role this year? What other tips do you have to share?
